Six Month Braces

Casey's wedding was a year away, and she didn't like her smile. The teeth were different colors, there was too much gum showing, and the front teeth seemed way too large for her face.

This is a young woman who stopped wearing her retainer as a teenager, and guess what, the tooth moved back to where it started. As a young adult, she was a much more compliant patient, and understood that once the teeth were re-straightened, she was going to be locked-into wearing retainers for a long time (many of our patients find no problem in doing this at least 3 nights a week for a lifetime).

It was really no big deal to get Holly looking this good, and again, look at the difference in your perception of her intelligence and personality and maturity. You know who the biggest cheers came from? Her parents, who felt guilty that they hadn't insisted that Holly wear her retainers after the braces came off.

Ignore, if you can, Todd's upper front teeth, and focus on the lowers. Many adults come to us desiring the uncrowding of lower teeth because as you age, they show more and more. Mario's case was complicated by a lack of space. There are supposed to be 6 lower front teeth between the arrows. This is similar to what we often see with patients who wore braces as adolescents, but never wore their retainers. The teeth move back close to their original position.

Todd's situation was one where there simply was not enough room for the six lower teeth, even with us expanding the upper jaw slightly to accommodate all the upper teeth. Note, if you will that there are only five lower front teeth, but look how straight they are.
