Play It Safe
New Jersey Dentist, Dr. Steve Markus offers helpful hints for parents on protecting their children's teeth. Dr. Markus wants you to play it safe with children's teeth. Here are some helpful hints for checking and protecting your children's teeth. Dr. Markus and the team at the Centre For Dentistry understand that your children may participate in contact sports and as such recommend the use of proper mouth guards. Continue to browse our site for more helpful hints in prevention of damage to your children's teeth.
- Don’t assume that your child is doing an excellent job
cleaning his or her teeth.
- Do check your child’s teeth after the brushing routine.
- Do have your child wear a mouth
guard for all contact sports (if possible for other sports activities
too). These mouth guards
should be determined by the dentist. For some sports, a boiled store
bought one may suffice. For others, a more rigid, professional model
is advocated. They need to be remade annually as the size of the jaws
grows. We also want you to know what
to do if someone is not wearing a guard and sustains an injury.
- Do continue to check your child’s teeth regularly to see
if he or she is brushing and flossing correctly.
- Do examine your child’s gums for any sign of gum disease
such as red, puffy and bleeding gums.
- Do check to see if your child’s
teeth are crowding. At your child’s next dental visit, inquire
about seeing an orthodontist for an evaluation.
